Future Development

Mission and Research Areas
The mission of this department centers on entomology. We provide advanced professional education through undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs, and conduct basic and applied research in entomology and related life sciences. We also promote the application of our research results in various areas, such as agricultural and vector pest control, biodiversity and ecological conservation, environmental education, and various insect-related industries, and assist the government with relevant policy initiatives.
Our main research and application areas encompass four key aspects: Insect Science, Plant Protection / Plant Medicine, Vectors and Environmental Pests, and Insect Resources. The area of Insect Science includes fundamental research in insect taxonomy, evolution, physiology, development, molecular biology, pathology, toxicology, ecology and behavior. The area of Plant Protection / Plant Medicine includes applied research in the identification, diagnosis, management and control of agricultural and forestry pests, and in various aspects of agricultural chemicals, insect and plant diseases, pest prevention, and animal and plant quarantine. The area of Vectors and Environmental Pests involves research and control of various environmental pests, medical insects, vector control, and human and animal infectious disease vectors. Finally, the field of Insect Resources aims to develop apiculture, ecological and environmental resource education, popular science education, circular economy principles utilizing insects for waste treatment, and various insect-related industries.

Directions for Future Development
In addition to continuously advancing research and applications in the four key areas of Insect Science, Plant Protection / Plant Medicine, Vectors and Environmental Pests, and Insect Resources, our department also designs curriculum maps for employment and coursework. This will enable students to pursue professional research and employment in the aforementioned fields. Most importantly, the development and application in the area of Insect Resources will encompass various employment opportunities related to food, clothing, housing, transportation, education and entertainment, including bee industry, popular science education, ecological auditing, biodiversity conservation, insect feed and food, circular economy using insects for waste treatment, and interdisciplinary fields.
Besides excelling in research or becoming educators, more than 80% of our graduates find entomology-related employment in central and local governmental offices, private enterprises, and entrepreneurship. In terms of curriculum design, we have completed learning plans for interdisciplinary expertise. Building on an entomological foundation, students can expand their personal interests. With an additional 8–10 credits, entomology students can obtain a certificate of completion for a second specialization. This allows them to pursue learning and certification in various departments across colleges, including Liberal arts, Management, Science, Engineering, and Life sciences, broadening their second specialization studies and employment opportunities.
We also actively promote internationalization. In addition to 16 English-language courses currently offered by the department, we have signed a “3+X program” undergraduate dual-degree accreditation with UC Davis and are about to sign master’s and doctoral dual-degree accreditations with several universities in Thailand and Indonesia. We hope to establish scholarships for international students, thus accelerating the internationalization of Department and promoting the development of entomology professionals globally.
Our Department has received funding from the National Development Council and is currently planning the establishment of the National Chung Hsing University Insect Museum. This museum will not only introduce our University and the insects of Taiwan to the public, but will also become an important venue influencing the research and development of life sciences in the country.
